Marine Survival Gear and Apparel for boating and fishing

From cruising on the lake to island-hopping, to towing a water-skier, power boats and sailboats are used for a wide range of activities. Accordingly, boaters need gear that is versatile and flexible, and at the same time specific to activities like waterskiing, rough water sailing and more. We offer a variety of Mustang Survival products for all of these needs.

Mustang Survival has done extensive research to understand cold-water survival. They know that many factors will effect how long you can survive at sea.

The length of time a person can survive in cold water primarily depends on both the water's temperature and the thermal insulation of the victim's protective clothing. Although models and charts can predict approximate survival times there are many variables that ultimately effect survivability.

The following factors will decrease survival times:

  • cold waters
  • turbulent waters (waves, water flushing)
  • active winds
  • body movement (spent heat energy from swimming or treading)
  • lack of thermal insulation or lean body composition
  • poor insulation over the core body (torso and other areas of significant thermal regulation)
  • direct contact with the water
  • physiological factors (low body fat, etc…)

How long a person can survive in cold water primarily depends on both the water's temperature and the thermal insulation of the victim's protective clothing.

To create the most effective protection attainable, Mustang Survival begins by evaluating the clothing's Immersed Clo values. Simply, they determine the rate at which heat is lost from the body, as well as the difference in temperature between the skin and the water. From the Immersed Clo values, predictions can be made of the rate at which a person's body temperature will drop in cold water. The smaller the Clo number the shorter the predicted survival time in the water.
